About Yvonne de Kock
Yvonne grew up on a farm between Paarl and Stellenbosch, first studied Art at Stellenbosch University and then Clinical Psychology at the University of Cape Town. She worked as a Clinical Psychologist in Cape Town before moving to New York City with her husband in 1993. They returned to Cape Town in mid-2009 with their two Indian street dogs, Leela and Rishi, and their 17 year old Persian cat, Apollo.
Yvonne’s grandmother first introduced her to yoga in 1976. Yvonne has studied and practiced Iyengar Yoga since 1991 and taught Iyengar Yoga since 1997 after doing her teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in New York City where she had been teaching until her return to Cape Town. She has studied in India with the Iyengar family numerous times.
Yvonne is a Certified Movement Analyst (with a certificate in Laban Movement Analysis) completing the full-time course in 1996.
Nature is an ongoing source of inspiration in her practice and teaching and one of the reasons for leaving NYC for life back home. She believes that the pulse of the universe is revealed in the flow, forms, and rhythms of Nature and sees yoga as a process that reveals a conscious connection between Nature and a profound Universal Principle. She also believes that yoga is a path that enables us to have a “panoramic view” of life on earth, and beyond.
Yvonne has a background in dance, martial arts, and numerous other sporting activities. She is an enthusiastic student of Sanskrit and Ayurveda and led the Institute’s Yoga Sutras Chanting Class in NYC for a while. Her dream of having a studio near a beach with the light and sounds of Africa streaming in, is now being realized.
